Chapter 7: IBM's System/88
Section 7.1: Introduction
Section 7.1.1: Product Line Positioning
The hardware for the System/88 series is purchased through an OEM
agreement with Stratus Computers. This OEM agreement has given both IBM
and Stratus a solid position among the leaders in the fault-tolerant
market. Stratus ranks second among the various competitors in the
market.
In addition to competing against Stratus' own fault-tolerant systems,
the XA/2000 and XA/R, IBM competes with the following vendors:
o Tandem Computers, whose NonStop systems are the leaders in the
fault-tolerant market.
o Sequoia Computer Systems, which markets a UNIX-based TOPIX
operating system and a tightly-coupled architecture with
fault-detection and recovery capabilities.
o Digital Equipment, which markets the VAXft 3000 Series as its
mid-range fault-tolerant strategy.
Markets for the System/88 include:
o continuous on-line transaction processing
o automatic teller machines
o financial and telecommunications markets
o networked reservation systems
o lottery ticketing systems
o manufacturing inventory systems
o law enforcement and security
Section 7.1.2: Product Line Strategies
IBM's goal with the System/88 line of fault-tolerant systems is to hold
a substantial share of the OLTP market in industries such as those
listed above. The market for fault-tolerant systems in these types of
industries has experienced continued growth as more and varied on-line
transaction processing applications evolve.
The Stratus OEM agreement allows IBM to provide the low-cost,
expandable processors that have made Stratus' redundant hardware
approach to fault tolerance increasingly attractive. IBM provides
enhanced versions of the OEMed systems, with additional compatibility
features and support, helping the System/88 to stand apart from its XA/R
and XA/2000 counterparts.
Section 7.1.3: Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
=========
o IBM's enhanced version of the system design provides over 200
value-added communications features and products.
Weaknesses
==========
o While IBM offers numerous support centers, it does not specifically
support only fault-tolerant systems. Vendors such as Tandem and
Stratus offer service centers more specifically dedicated to fault-
tolerant architecture.
Section 7.1.4: Futures
IBM has announced its intention to support Open Systems Interconnection
(OSI), via the inclusion of the Open Software Foundation's (OSF's)
Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) and Transarc's Encina.
